What We Can Learn from Selena’s Break from Hollywood

October 22, 2016

If you’ve been hiding under a rock since August, you may not know about Selena Gomez’s break from Hollywood. In August the singer announced that she would be taking some time off, including canceling parts of her Revival World Tour, to focus on herself and her health.

Last year Selena revealed to the public that she has been diagnosed with lupus, an autoimmune disease that attacks healthy tissue in the body. Symptoms include not only physical ailments like inflammation and swelling of major organs, but the disease also takes a toll on the mind.

“I’ve discovered that anxiety, panic attacks and depression can be side effects of lupus, which can present their own challenges,” Selena said in a public statement to People.

Recently, however, Selena was spotted getting a bite to eat at a Texas Roadhouse in Tennessee. The star supposedly took time to pose for pictures with fans and she looked happy to be in the midst of fans once again. According to Vogue UK, Selena has returned to rehab to seek further help. An insider described the treatment center as a “private and quiet place, but super intense.”

While Selena’s diagnosis is unfortunate, the story here is not "Ohmygod! Did you hear about Selena’s illness? So sad." I admire Selena for taking time to care for herself and to see that she faces these challenges head on. As a celebrity, I’m sure it’s difficult to bring something like this to the public’s attention due to the fear of being seen as “weak” or “vulnerable”. It’s also hard to make health your number one priority when you have so much going on like a world tour.

We can all learn something about Selena’s decision to step back and take care of herself. We can easily forget about ourselves while we are breaking our backs to make others our first priority. Health isn’t something you can ignore for twenty years and then hope to pay for any necessary treatment because health cannot be bought. While materialistic things can be bought and fill a temporary gap in the soul, happiness and health can never be bought. Selena has influenced the world not only with her music and acting, but with her compassionate heart and watchful eyes, and I think she deserves to take her time in this healing process.

At the end of her parting statement with People, Selena encourages her fans to take care of their own issues, and to be proactive in all ways possible. It’s easier said than done, but as selfish as it may sound, we should always put ourselves first in situations like this. After all, what is everything else compared to a mind that is whole and free of distress?
