Organization may take time, but when you get into the habit of it, I promise you your life becomes so much easier. Wishing there were more hours in a day won’t help you until you’ve mastered the art of time management. I bet we’ve all wished that we had just one more hour to finish up our work, one more our to relax or catch up on our favorite TV show, one more hour to sleep, or one more hour to socialize with our friends. The truth is there is no magic trick or one way to managing your time and staying organized. However, from my personal experience with juggling school, work, “me time", and a social life, there are a few tips that have helped me keep my sanity in check that require very minimal life adjustments! Below are a few ideas which might help you!
1. Start Writing Things Down
To me, this is the biggest part of staying organized and what has helped me the most. Trying to remember things will NOT help you stay organized. No matter how excellent your memory may be, you will still find yourself feeling cluttered and overwhelmed by trying to keep track of everything in your head. As your life becomes busier, it is harder to envision yourself getting everything done on time. Grab a pen and paper, and write down everything you have to do. Whether it is a weekly or daily to-do list, writing things down helps you feel like you have some sort of control and it has a huge impact on your performance. Once you’ve finished a task, cross that bad boy off and move on!
2. Set Schedules and Deadlines
It is important to not waste time doing things that amount to nothing. A to-do list does not work until you give yourself the time to get everything done. This part can be a little fun if you let it! Give yourself a deadline and see how well you are at meeting it. When I start a new project, I always give myself a certain deadline for when I want to have it finished by, and when I have it done by the deadline I always feel more motivated and accomplished, which is important when wanting to stay productive! Trying to spontaneously do things throughout the day can get messy. Prioritize things that need to get done first and leave the less important things for last.
3. Declutter Your Environment
Keeping your life organized means keeping your things in their proper places. Your workspace should be free of clutter and distractions. If your desk is cluttered, then you feel cluttered. A clean space will clear your mind.
Take the time to reorganize your things and throw away what’s unnecessary. I promise you, your mind will be at ease when you know precisely what’s in your work space/room and where exactly to access it.
4. Reward Yourself
Believe it or not, rewarding yourself does help with keeping your life on track. The closer you are to checking off all the things on your to-do list, the closer you are to some leisure time. This is the part where you treat yourself to a couple episodes of your favorite TV show on Netflix or hang out with friends. Giving yourself something to look forward to after you’ve completed all your goals makes the process more enjoyable!
5. Put in the Effort
Now that you have your to-do list with your deadlines and see that it is do-able, all you have to do is do it! These simple tips helped me shape my day-to-day, drastically. It pushed me to get all my work done without feeling too overwhelmed, while still being able to have a social life. Being able to physically see all that you have to do and then checking it off once you are done gives you a feeling of satisfaction, which encourages you to continue. Writing things down or giving yourself deadlines might not take away your stress entirely, but it definitely does make your life a whole lot easier!
