Who Cares About the Earth Anyways?

I am constantly worrying and wondering if there is a better way to do things or a “cleaner” lifestyle I can pursue. I’ve been thinking a lot about the future of this planet and where we’ll leave off once our generation has passed. Sustainability plays a huge role in maintaining and improving the condition of the earth. I’m not a genius on the facts of climate change, but I believe it’s happening. We see typical arguments being thrown around such as the melting of the polar ice caps or the record hitting weather we’ve been experiencing, but they aren't petty things to ignore.

Sometimes I wonder what it’s all for. Like, who cares if we treat the planet poorly? Once we’re gone, we’re gone. It’s so easy to get trapped in that “who cares?” mindset. When I look around at the litter on my university campus and the amount of waste, I get discouraged and I wonder if our generation even knows anything about caring for the environment.

Small actions may not make a huge difference, but they do make some. Simple things such as recycling a plastic water bottle or cutting your shower 10 minutes shorter can lead to larger impacts in the future. If you step back and analyze the greater picture, it can seem like we’re stranded in a pit several feet below the surface of the ground and we’re looking up, trying to find a way out. But when we use the excuse that we are only one person, that’s when we become permanently stuck in the ground. If we want to climb out, we need to band together to form a ladder and scrape our way back to the top.

I’m not saying switch to a vegan diet or boycott driving (unless you want to), but take simple things into consideration. Your actions can lead to a massive revelation and when we combine all our efforts, we’ll begin to see results. I challenge you to volunteer at a tree planting organization or a campaign to end the use of single-use plastic bags. Maybe it sounds cheesy, but together, we can make all the difference.

As Donald Trump continues to shut down environmentalists and denies climate change, we're only reversing the progress we have made thus far. Like many of the other things he is turning upside down, our planet - our home - is going to flip out of whack if we continue to sit and watch the destruction take place. We have many more hands than Donald Trump, so let's put them to use and work for a better earth.
